The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed this Tuesday that his Government received an invitation from the American president, Donald Trump so that the country joins its call Peace Boardalthough he stressed that the response is being analyzed due to Mexico’s historical position in foreign policy and its recognition of the Palestinian State.
“We did receive the invitation from President Trump and the response we gave was that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) had to analyze it and it has to do with this decision (that) Mexico is a country that has recognized Palestine as a nation,” said the president.
So far, around twenty nations, some of them led by allies close to Trump, have expressed their support for the initiative, but the great powers and the majority of European countries have been reticent, considering that the Peace Board weakens the United Nations (UN).
Sheinbaum explained that the decision to join the body created by Trump cannot be made unilaterally and must adhere to the constitutional principles of Mexican foreign policy, including respect for the self-determination of the people.
In addition, he emphasized that the recognition of the Palestinian State is a central element to evaluate the invitation of the American president.
“It is very important (the recognition of Palestine as a State). We, within the framework of our Constitution, have to respond because it is not a personal decision. And within the framework of our Constitution, it is the self-determination of the people,” he said.
Mexico has historically maintained a foreign policy based on the principles of non-intervention, peaceful resolution of disputes and self-determination.
In February of last year, Sheinbaum stated that Mexico recognizes both the “State of Palestine” and the “State of Israel” and reiterated the need to “build a peaceful solution,” a position that he has reiterated in multilateral forums such as the United Nations.

Finally, Sheinbaum indicated that the SRE will be in charge of analyzing the scope of the invitation and defining the country’s official position “this week.”
At least 35 heads of state and government, including those of Israel, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have agreed to take part, while other nations, such as France, Spain and Sweden, have rejected it.
The statute grants broad powers to its president – that is, Trump – such as the right to veto or set the agenda, and provides permanent mandates for the largest financial contributors.
