An investigation reveals that the Google and Apple application stores offer dozens of apps that undress with AI

An investigation carried out by the organization Tech Transparency Project (TTP) has revealed that, despite growing controversies regarding the generation of explicit images with AI, companies such as Google and Apple still host this type of applications in their stores.

Specifically, they have identified 55 applications of this type in the Google Play Storewhile in the Apple App Store quantity drops to 47. Among them, the most popular is Grokthe ‘chatbot’ of X (formerly Twitter), which generated thousands of explicit images on the social network, including nudes of minors.

To find these types of apps, TTP explained that it simply typed “nudify” and “undress” into the search bars of app stores. These applications are divided into two categories: those that They use AI to generate images and videos at the request of users, and those that They use AI to make ‘deepfakes’superimposing one person’s face on another’s body.

Among the most popular was DreamFacewith more than 10 million downloads, which allowed avatars or dance videos to be generated with AI. To test it, TTP used the free video diary option, uploaded an image of a girl in a coffee shop, and asked the app to make a video of her dancing and taking off her top, with nothing on underneath. And so the ‘app’ did, without any type of restriction despite its terms of service that prohibit its use to generate “sexually explicit” content.

It should be noted that DreamFace was available in the Google Play Store for those over 13 years old and for those over 9 years old in the Apple App Store, so children had the possibility of generating nudes without any impediment.

The number of downloads of the applications has risen to 705 million in totalgenerating $117 million in revenue (about 98 million euros), according to an AppMagic analysis collected by TTP. Although both companies defend that they prohibit “nudify” applications, the organization denounces that in the end they end up profiting from them.

The presentation of these applications clashes with the policies of these stores about inappropriate content: Google makes it clear that they do not allow applications that contain sexual content, such as pornography or nudity without consent. For its part, Apple rejects applications that contain “overtly pornographic” material, as well as those that spread defamatory content.

Following the publication of the report, both Google and Apple have asked TTP for the list of applications that generate nudity.
