As part of an ongoing major maneuver, NATO is gathering more than a dozen warships and sending them towards Germany. The deployment is part of the largest NATO exercise of the year, “Steadfast Dart 26” under the command of the German four-star general Ingo Gerhartz. The rapid relocation of thousands of soldiers within Europe from the south and west to the north and east is practiced. The background is the threat from Russia.
Gerhartz, the former head of the Air Force and NATO commander responsible for the defense of Central Europe, visited the southern Spanish military port of Rota as part of the exercise. Four Turkish and two Spanish ships are scheduled to leave from there in the coming days. The units are scheduled to arrive in Kiel on February 11th.

Other ships from Germany, France, the Netherlands and Poland join later. On the way to Germany, securing the convoy with air support should also be practiced, because in the event of a conflict an enemy would most likely try to disrupt such troop deployments.
“Especially in these times it is so important that we demonstrate the unity of our alliance, our NATO,” said Gerhartz in Rota. It’s not about a message against anyone, but about a 360-degree message of high NATO operational readiness and a message of unity within the alliance.
