Russia confirms that Trump called for a ceasefire for a week until February 1 and avoids revealing the response

The Kremlin confirmed this Friday that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, asked the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, for a one-week ceasefire, until February 1, although it has avoided revealing what Moscow’s response is and whether it will cease the attacks between now and Sunday.

“President Trump personally asked President Putin to refrain from attacking kyiv for a week, until February 1, to create favorable conditions for negotiations,” detailed the Russian presidential spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, about the demand that Trump announced this Thursday regarding a truce.

In any case, Peskov has avoided revealing what Moscow’s response is to this demand from Washington. “I have nothing to add in terms of details to what has already been said. I want to emphasize once again that we are talking about creating favorable conditions for negotiations,” he explained in statements to the press collected by the Russian agency Interfax.

Trump announced Thursday that Putin has promised him to stop bombing Ukraine for a week, after Russian attacks left thousands of Ukrainians without power amid extreme weather conditions.

“Due to the extreme cold (…) I have personally asked Putin not to attack kyiv or other cities and towns for a week. And he has agreed. It has been very nice,” he said during a meeting of his cabinet at the White House.

At the moment it has not emerged whether Russia is committed to this truce, since the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has opened up to applying this ceasefire and has revealed that this measure was discussed during trilateral contacts in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Russia and the United States.
