Call for withdrawal from the contract: Austria received warning letters from the EU

Trade and investment would fall within the exclusive competence of the European Union, argued the EU Commission, which initiated formal infringement proceedings in this case. The Member States can only exercise this competence if the Union authorizes them to do so. In addition to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, Malta, Romania, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden were also asked to withdraw from the Energy Charter.

On Friday, Austria was confronted with several further warning letters from Brussels due to the lack or insufficient implementation of EU law: This concerns reporting obligations in the areas of food and food ingredients, outdoor noise emissions, patient rights and radio equipment, the directive on distance selling financial services contracts, the directive on consumer credit contracts, the mortgage credit directive, the methane regulation, the amended directive on intelligent transport systems, asbestos protection regulations, the directive on the requirements for budgetary policy frameworks and the updated labeling of honey, fruit juices, jams and dried milk. If the lack of implementation continues, the EU Commission can refer the matter to the European Court of Justice.
