Fritz avoids making a clear commitment to coach Steffen

Coach Horst Steffen from Werder Bremen is threatened with retirement after the 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Unlike in previous weeks, sports director Clemens Fritz made no further commitment to working with the 56-year-old.

“We’ll let this sink in now. Then we’ll sit down together and analyze it. It’s important that we sort this out for ourselves first,” said Fritz. “We haven’t won ten games. It’s clear that we have to sit down and discuss this.”

The table 15th. The Bundesliga did not fall apart after the 0-1 defeat. “I also saw the unity of the team. But it’s only one point. You don’t make any big leaps with that,” said Fritz.

Coach Steffen: I’m still ready

Horst Steffen doesn’t want to give up without a fight. “I feel good here and am looking forward to further cooperation and hope that it continues for a long time. I assume that I will continue to be a coach and will remain,” said Steffen on ARD.

He still has a relationship of trust with the players. “The belief is great. Whether I can continue doesn’t depend on me,” said Steffen at the press conference after the game.

Supporters of the four-time German champion had previously started an internet petition with the aim of overthrowing sports director Fritz. “I think it’s normal. The fact that the criticism is getting bigger is part of it,” Fritz said before the game on DAZN.
