“Re-admission of Russia to competitions? War is a crime”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s words in favor of Russia’s possible reinstatement in international football competitions are “irresponsible” and “childish”. This was stated by Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi, according to whom the FIFA president’s statements “detach football from the reality in which children are killed”.

Yesterday, in an interview with Sky News, Infantino he had argued that the decision to exclude Russia from international football competitions should be “absolutely reviewed” because “this ban achieved nothing, it only created more frustration and hatred. Allowing boys and girls from Russia to play football in other parts of Europe would help”.

Ukraine against Infantino: “Irresponsible words about Russia”

“Let me remind you that since the beginning of the large-scale aggression of the Russia More than 650 Ukrainian athletes and coaches were killed. Among them there were 100 football players”, added the Ukrainian minister Matvii Bidnyi, citing the case of Illia Perezhogin: “A high school student in Mariupol who was simply playing football in his school stadium when a Russian missile hit”, and that of the former futsal player Viktoriia Kotliarova, “killed together with her mother during the bombing of Kiev on December 29, 2023”. And again: “War is a crime, not politics. It is Russia that politicizes sport and uses it to justify aggression. As long as the Russians continue to kill Ukrainians and politicize sports, their flag and national symbols have no place among people who respect values such as justice, integrity and fair play.”
