Bundesliga: Werder Bremen brings Daniel Thioune as coach

Bundesliga soccer club Werder Bremen has brought in Daniel Thioune to replace fired coach Horst Steffen. The North Germans announced the 51-year-old’s signing on Wednesday. Thioune, who coached the second division team Fortuna Düsseldorf until October, is now head coach and is tasked with saving Bremen from relegation. The club did not provide any information about the term of the contract.

Thioune has previously coached VfL Osnabrück (2017 to 2020) and Bremen’s northern rivals Hamburger SV (2020 to 2021) in the second division. He then worked in Düsseldorf for around three and a half years, and his contract in the Rhineland ran until 2028. Thioune is scheduled to lead his new team’s first training session on Wednesday (2 p.m.).

Werder had apparently previously rejected Bo Svensson, their preferred candidate, and Bo Henriksen was also considered a possible option. After ten games without a win, Bremen is in the middle of a relegation battle and is 15th in the table. The lead over the relegation place is only one point. On Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky) Werder will be visiting SC Freiburg. The club parted ways with Steffen after the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-1).
