Russian police shoot kidnapper after double murder

Police shot a suspect during the attempted arrest of two hostage-takers in Moscow on Tuesday evening. The Russian Investigative Committee has now announced that the second suspected perpetrator has now made a confession. A day-long search for victims and perpetrators had previously kept Russia in suspense. Most recently, men were hiding in the luxury Moscow suburb of Rublyovka.

The two men are said to have kidnapped and killed a 39-year-old in the Russian Penza region a week ago. One of the reasons given for the crime is greed. According to police reports, they later also killed a taxi driver who was taking them from the Volga region to the Russian capital. The suspect killed in the shootout with the police had a previous conviction for double murder – and was released early from prison in 2022.

Convicts were pardoned for service at the front

According to media reports, the dismissal is related to the war in Ukraine ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. The man was probably one of thousands who were hired from prison by the Wagner mercenary organization to fight in the war against the neighboring country. The Kremlin has promised serious criminals pardons for their actions. Since then, a number of cases have become public in which criminals committed crimes in Russia again after serving at the front.
