Garmin’s stop light has radar and sees the size of the vehicle behind the cyclist. They also revealed the price

When paired with a compatible Garmin Edge cycling computer or the Varia smartphone app, the RearVue 820 provides visual and audible warnings of vehicles approaching or changing lanes behind the cyclist. The new vehicle size recognition function further improves safety because it distinguishes between small, medium and large vehicles and displays this information directly on the device screen or in the application.

Thanks to the wider field of vision, the radar can track the movement of vehicles several lanes away, and the powerful radar technology enables the detection of vehicles at a distance of more than 175 meters. The device also recognizes situations in which a vehicle is driving at the same speed as a cyclist or is waiting for an opportunity to overtake, giving the driver additional time to react. Selected Garmin smart watches offer both vibration and voice alerts, which further increases the level of safety while driving.

In addition to the advanced radar, the Varia RearVue 820 is also the brightest rear light Garmin has ever produced. It is visible from a distance of more than two kilometers and offers several modes of operation, including day and night flashing, constant light and peloton mode. Through the Varia app, cyclists can adjust the light patterns, brightness level and flash duration to their own needs. The device also functions as a stop light – it recognizes slowing down or stopping and warns road users with a special flashing pattern.

A big advantage of the new model is the battery life: up to 24 hours in daytime flashing and up to 30 hours in radar-only mode, which makes it suitable for longer drives. The RearVue 820 comes in a compact, modern housing with a USB-C charging port and a new seat post that easily mounts on most road and gravel bikes.
