Roger Kluge wins gold at the European Track Cycling Championships

Kluge, who had only decided to take part in the European Championships at short notice due to a gastrointestinal illness, stood in for Tim Torn Teutenberg, who was in poor health, in the two-man team race. For Kluge it was his fifth European Championship gold in Madison. The day before he had already won bronze in the omnium.

By winning several rounds, the German duo got 85 points and in the end was clearly ahead of silver winner Portugal, who had 55 points. For Kluge, this is far from over; despite his age, he named the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as his goal.

Friedrich takes bronze in the Keirin

Back in 2008, Kluge came into the limelight with silver in the points race at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Numerous successes followed on the track, including three world titles in Madison.

On the last day of the title fights, Lea Sophie Friedrich also secured another medal. The 26-year-old won bronze in the Keirin and, together with the Madison men, further increased the German tally on the last day of competition.

With three titles, two second places and four bronze medals, the total haul of nine medals is quite satisfactory for German Cycling. In the medal ranking, in which the dominant British were ahead of Belgium, Germany ended up in third place.
