Sergio Peris-Mencheta directs the play ‘Constellations’, an “experiment” setup in which each function varies depending on an initial draw. This creation will be in the Teatro Valle Inclán of the National Dramatic Center (CDN) from this Friday until next March 29.
With text by Nick Payne from 2012, Peris-Mencheta has created his own version with the intention that both he and the actors will enjoy it, “not so much the viewer.” It tells the love story between a couple, in which she – who is a quantum physicist – tries to convince her partner with science that euthanasia is a “safe, calm, free” option. and not so “sad” because what they experience may only happen in one universe, not in others.
Thus, the cast is made up of three actresses (Clara Serrano, Paula Muñoz and María Pascual) and three actors (David Pérez Bayona, Jordi Coll and Diego Monzón) who are also musicians and singers. Every night, already in the Valle Inclán room itself, a draw will be held to determine who gives life to the couple and who is in charge of the music. It is the soundtrack that dictates which version of the four proposed will be seen on stage.
Peris-Mencheta, who has described this project as a “challenge”, explained that one of the premises is that the couple on stage is not the same as the one in the previous night’s performance, and then specified that, one day before the absolute premiere, they have not tried all the possible combinations.
“Everyone knows all the roles, all the characters. Well, to this day not all of them still do. We have many possibilities, but you don’t know all of them yet. Of Of the 240 possible we will have about 120 or more like this. “We’re just sorry,” he commented with amusement.
The director and actor has recognized the risk of each role but has acknowledged that he wanted to “play” to see what would happen if instead of directing some of the actors, he had to direct others.
“Directing for me is a way that is increasingly similar, it resonates more and more with what it is to live: It is to encounter difficulties that turn into always putting them in your favor. I was born in university theater, I didn’t want to be an actor, but in university theater I discovered acting and started directing as well. And in university theater you work with what there is and get oil from where there is none,” concluded Peris-Mencheta.
