The strong wind loosens one of the bronze lilies that top the Giralda in Seville

The strong gusts of wind that Seville has been experiencing since the early hours of this Thursday, February 5, due to the storm Leonardo, have caused the detachment of one of the bronze lily jars found in the Renaissance body of the Giralda; specifically, the one that was in the southeast area of ​​the tower.

This was reported by the Local Police in a message published by Emergencies Seville on their social networks, consulted by Europa Press, and confirmed by the Cathedral Chapter, which explained that this landslide occurred around 6:15 a.m. “due to the exceptional weather conditions, fortunately without causing personal injury.” The Local Police therefore maintains the area of ​​the Plaza Virgen de los Reyes where these elements have fallen.

The statement from the Cathedral Chapter highlights that a visual technical inspection of the rest of the Giralda’s finishes has been carried out by the technicians responsible for the Cathedral, “without any other apparent defects having been detected.” However, the security perimeter around the tower will be maintained, “until a more in-depth review can be carried out with auxiliary means that allow the existence of dangers to be ruled out.”

The detached lily is integrated into the Renaissance finish that is currently pending the City Council’s license decree to begin its restoration, adds the Cabildo.

In this sense, at the end of last October, the Provincial Heritage Commission reported favorably on the rehabilitation project of the Renaissance body of the Giralda in order to achieve the global restoration of the bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville, once the conservation phase of the four faces of the Almohad tower was concluded in 2024.

The execution responds to the cultural values ​​of the property that is the object of the intervention and will act on the different bodies that make up the auction and that serve as a pedestal for the Giraldillo: body of bells, body of lilies, body of the clock, body of the stars, body of the caroms, plume and jar.
