Real chaos unfolded on Friday night on the Austrian A2 motorway near Traiskirchen, south of Beacon. A group of 50 to 60 masked hooligans tried to organize a brutal ambush for Croatian fans who were returning from a basketball game. Armed with wooden bats and iron bars, the hooligans tried to stop the vehicles on the highway, but the quick reaction of the police prevented bloodshed, reports Heute.
Planned attack after the game
The incident occurred after the ABA League match between Vienna and Zadar. According to information from the Austrian media, the police received reports during the day about dozens of vehicles with foreign license plates moving towards Beccaron. There was a well-founded suspicion that the goal of those groups was an organized attack and showdown with Croatian fans.
Around 9:00 p.m., several drivers reported an alleged chain collision at the stop lane near Leobersdorf, but the police determined that it was a false report, probably with the aim of creating traffic jams and panic. Not long after, 15 to 20 cars were spotted on the parallel road along the A2 highway, from which dozens of masked persons got out.

The hooligans then tried to make their way from the embankment onto the highway itself in order to intercept and attack vehicles with Croatian fans. Austrian media reports that the attackers were armed with wooden baseball bats and aluminum rods. The whole situation was further complicated by reports of burning vehicles, which later turned out to be false and that the flames originated from pyrotechnics.
Thanks to the quick intervention of the Vienna police and forces from Lower Austria, they prevented the escalation of the conflict. The police managed to suppress the hooligans, who then scattered and fled in their vehicles. There was no direct conflict, but the police confiscated more than 40 bats, iron bars and other items intended for attack at the scene.
A traffic accident also occurred during the chaotic intervention. The fire engine, which was rushing to intervene due to a false fire report, collided with a passenger car on the B17 road. Five people were injured in that accident, including three firefighters.
