Analysis: 62 percent of women work in “women’s jobs”

The majority of employed women – namely 62 percent – work in “women’s professions”the majority of men – 57 percent – in “Men’s profession”. This is shown by an analysis by the trade union-affiliated Momentum Institute on the occasion of Equal Pay Days am 11. Februar, which draws attention to a gender-based wage gap of 11.5 percent. Only eight percent of women work in men’s jobs that are better paid on average, while 14 percent of men work in women’s jobs.

Male and female occupations are defined as those in which the proportion of men or women is over 70 percent. Women’s jobs include, for example, trade, care, cleaning and education; Male occupations include industry, construction, IT and transport. +

In Mixed professions Men and women are employed to a similar extent. There is almost a balanced gender ratio among lawyers, doctors and architects.

Women concentrate on a few areas

23 of 123 occupational subgroups are women’s occupations, 45 are men’s and 55 are mixed occupations. Women also concentrate more on a few areas than men. According to the calculation, 9.7 percent of all working women are employed in retail alone, 6.6 percent in cleaning and 4.7 percent in care professions and the healthcare sector.

According to the Momentum Institute, mixed occupations have the highest gross hourly wages on average and women’s occupations have the lowest. Women’s jobs earn 14 percent less per gross hour than men’s jobs and 18 percent less than mixed jobs. “Care, education, support, cleaning and trade keep this country running. But they are paid and treated like second-class activities,” criticized economist Sophie Achleitner.

The institute therefore advocates higher wages in women’s jobs. In addition, the compatibility between family and job must be improved by expanding childcare and reducing working hours with full wage compensation and mandatory father’s leave must be introduced. There are also calls for mandatory salary transparency – a corresponding EU directive must be implemented by the middle of the year.
