Internet of things, in 30% Mexican homes

Three out of every 10 homes in Mexico have voice assistants, connected security systems, automated lighting and smart appliances, among other equipment that is part of the so-called Internet of Things (IoT), a communication network between devices, showed the National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Homes (Endutih) 2025, carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The proportion of households with Internet access rose from 71.7 percent in 2023 to 75.3 percent in 2025, while the use of the Internet of Things rose from 20 percent in 2023 to almost 30 percent in 2025.

Simultaneously, the number of users of IoT devices increased from 27.6 million in 2023 to 37.9 million in 2025, according to the study recovered by The Competitive Intelligence Unit (The CIU), a consulting firm specialized in telecommunications.

Endutih figures show that entertainment devices from the IoT ecosystem are the most used in the home, with 59.3 percent of users, although their presence in homes is lower (22.9 percent).

In contrast, speakers with virtual assistants show greater adoption in homes (63.6 percent), totaling just over 7 million devices, but a slightly lower level of use (55.5 percent), suggesting that they function more as connectivity infrastructure than as devices for constant use, commented The CIU.

Other segments such as surveillance are used by 38.4 percent of households and 23.3 percent of people. Smart lighting is used by 13.4 percent of homes and 10.1 percent of users.

“The home IoT ecosystem has seen steady growth in recent years, going from a nascent trend to a key component of everyday life,” the consultancy noted.

He commented that the expansion of devices such as voice assistants, entertainment systems, surveillance and smart appliances reflects how connectivity has become a tool for efficiency, security and comfort.

“This advance demonstrates that smart homes not only respond to current needs, but also open the door to new forms of interaction with technology,” added the analysis carried out by Fabrizio Vargas, an analyst at the firm.

He highlighted that the perspectives point towards greater interoperability between devices, the use of artificial intelligence to anticipate needs and the expansion of sustainable energy solutions that optimize resources, personalize experiences and improve quality of life.
