The Ukrainian skeleton driver Vladislaw Heraskewych remembers fellow athletes who died in the war with a special helmet design. On the head protection you can see the pictures of around half a dozen athletes who died in Russian attacks. Heraskewytsch wore the helmet in official training on Monday and hopes that he will be able to wear it in competition at the end of the week.
“We didn’t break any rules and I should be allowed to compete with this helmet,” Heraskewytsch told the AP news agency, adding: “I can’t understand how this helmet could hurt anyone. It’s a tribute to athletes and some of them were medalists at the Youth Olympic Games. That means they’re part of the Olympic family.”
The question now is how the International Olympic Committee will decide. The IOC prohibits political messages in its statutes and has been asked to respond.
