Hakan Fidan: “Iranian developments could force Turkey to join the nuclear race”

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with CNN Turk that at the moment there is no risk of war between the United States and Iran, noting that official Ankara is making every effort to “prevent a catastrophe.”

“The regime cannot be changed with the help of air strikes. And the problem is not in the regime itself, but in the decisions it makes and the policies it pursues. And there are regimes more totalitarian than the Iranian one,” he said, adding that if a war breaks out, no one knows where it will lead.

Asked whether Turkey sees Iran’s nuclear program as a threat, the minister said: “We don’t want to upset the regional balance of power, which could trigger a nuclear race, but we will inevitably have to join that race.”

Fidan also said that on the eve of the 12-day war, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called him and asked, in essence, to warn the Iranians about a possible attack. “Tell them that anything is possible in the next few hours,” said the American politician. The information has been transmitted.
