New God of War game released for PS5: The remake of the first series is coming

In the announcement, they further fueled the nostalgia with the return of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos from the Greek era. It’s a detail that will especially sit well with older fans, because it was this voice that marked the tone of the first games, before the Norwegian twist in 2018 and Ragnarök.

The second news is much more tangible, because nothing is expected. God of War: Sons of Sparta came out immediately, as a smaller but very “čsame” spin off for PS5. The game is a 2D action platformer with hand-drawn pixel animation, and the story goes back to Kratos’ youth and training in the Spartan agoga, alongside his brother Deimos.

The gameplay is adapted to the 2D format, so the focus is on fast rhythm, jumps, fighting with a spear and shield, and special powers called ‘Gifts of Olympus’ in the text. Along with the classic enemies they recreated in 2D style, they also announced new ghosts inspired by less exposed parts of Greek mythology.

Sons of Sparta is a collaboration between Mega Cat Studios and Santa Monica Studios, and is sold digitally in two versions. The standard edition is 29.99 euros, while the Digital Deluxe is 39.99 euros, with extras like a digital artbook and soundtrack.

In short, Sony has done a combination that usually works: a big, long-term project for fans who want to return to Greece, and a quick, immediately available game that serves as a surprise and bonus for the 20th anniversary of the series.
