Frederiksen: Trump has not given up his desire to take over Greenland

Trump Već has long sought control over Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark, claiming that it is necessary to protect American national security.

He recently threatened European countries that oppose it with tariffs, but later withdrew the threats and ruled out a military conquest of the world’s largest island.

However, Frederiksen does not think that the crisis is over.

“I think the desire of the American president is the same. He is very serious about this topic,” said the Danish prime minister at a security conference in Munich.

When asked by the leader of the panel if there is a price for which Denmark would sell Greenland to Trump, she answered: “Of course there is not. Can you set a price for a part of Spain? Or for a part of the USA?”.

“We have to protect sovereign states. We have to protect the people’s right to self-determination. And the Greenlanders were completely clear: they did not want to become Americans,” Frederiksen pointed out.

Since Trump abandoned tariffs and the military option, the US, Denmark and Greenland have been holding talks about the future of the islands behind closed doors, including in Munich, where Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday on the sidelines of the conference.
