With a history of serious injuries, Athletico striker leaves crying in the Paranaense semi-final

Coach João Correia lost a piece in the squad of the aspiring team Athletico in the draw with Londrina, in the first game of the semi-final of the Campeonato Paranaense. Just 12 minutes into the game, striker Renan Viana suffered an injury and was replaced by young Lucas Amorim, aged 19.

The detail is that, at 23 years old, Renan Viana has already overcome two ruptured injuries to his knee ligaments. With this history, the athlete is concerned and must undergo tests after the red-black delegation returns to Curitiba. According to journalist Monique Vilela, from Rádio TMC, the young man felt the back of his thigh.

Starting for Rubro-Negro in the semi-final, the number 9 fell alone on the pitch and informed the Furacão bench that he was unable to continue. Sitting down, he hid his face with his shirt. Without needing a stretcher to leave the field, it was clear that the attacker was crying a lot and was comforted by some teammates and members of the coaching staff.

Renan Viana was already removed due to indiscipline and was injured during loan

It is worth remembering that the 23-year-old player has already suffered two ligament rupture injuries. In May 2023, when he was on the under-20 team, Renan Viana ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). After surgery, it took almost ten months of recovery until being included in some main team games by then coach Cuca.

In April 2024, Viana made his professional debut for Athletico in the 1-0 victory over Danubio, in Uruguay, in the Copa Sudamericana. The young man replaced Mastriani, 20 minutes into the second half, at the opportunity. However, in June, he ended up being removed from Rubro-Negro’s main squad for committing an act of indiscipline in training at CT do Caju. Since the episode, he started training separately at Furacão.

After that, Renan Viana was loaned to Wydad Casablanca, from Morocco, and ruptured all the ligaments in his knee on his debut for the Moroccan team, in October 2024. The loan would run until August 2025, but the player returned to CT do Caju in the first half of the year to complete his recovery.

Last year, Renan Viana was only used in five games of the FPF Cup, a tournament in which Athletico used an alternative team with a large part of the under-20 squad. Even so, the club renewed the contract with Renan Viana until December 2027.

Born in Nova Granada, in the interior of São Paulo, Renan Viana started at Grêmio Novorizontino’s base, passed through Flamengo, until arriving at CT do Caju, in 2020. One of the highlights of the Atletico base, he was called up and participated in the South American under-20 title in 2023.
