Winter Games in Antholz: Biathlon relay with top line-up: “Our biggest opportunity”

The biathletes Justus Strelow, David Zobel, Philipp Nawrath and Philipp Horn are reaching for the longed-for relay medal at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The German Ski Association announced this. After the disappointing fourth place in Beijing four years ago, the men should be on the podium again on Tuesday (2.30 p.m./ARD and Eurosport) in Antholz. In three individual races so far there had been no precious metal for the German men in South Tyrol. Nawrath and Strelow won bronze in the mixed relay at the start.

“I wouldn’t call it a lifeline, but it’s definitely our best chance, you have to be honest like that,” said final runner Horn: “We’ve already shown in the relay this year that we can make it to the podium.” At the World Cup in Ruhpolding we finished third.

“We want to be on the podium in the relay”

Behind the favorites France and Norway, Germany could fight for a medal with Sweden and Italy. “We’re all good relay runners, we’ve proven that often enough,” said the 31-year-old Horn: “And I think all the other nations know that too. The other boys know that we can always go one better in the relay.”

Four years ago, the German quartet remained without a medal in Beijing, and in 2018 they won bronze in Pyeongchang. Just like at the World Cup last year. “We’re fighting now just like last year and showing them that we can do it. And then we want to be on the podium in the relay,” said Horn. The last major triumph to date came with gold at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
