Cruelty to animals in horse riding leads to the cancellation of the tournament in Munich

After a riding tournament in Munich was canceled, details emerged that clearly indicate animal cruelty. “During the night there was an incident in the stable in which six ponies had their manes, tails and some of their heads cut off,” said Wilfried Herkommer to the specialist portal “equi pages”. Several horses “had their tongues tightly wrapped with rubber bands,” reported the former managing director of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association.

According to the portal, Herkommer was himself at the tournament, which was canceled on Sunday because of the incidents. His granddaughter rode in Munich in the U21 tour. “The shock was great for everyone,” said Herkommer. “The children were deeply disturbed. Nobody wanted to ride under these circumstances anymore. Everyone just wanted to go home.”

“We are deeply shocked”

The German Equestrian Association reported on Sunday about incidents relevant to animal welfare. According to the association, no details were published for investigative reasons. The police have started the investigation. The responsible district veterinary office is involved in the processes.

“We are deeply shocked by the incidents in Munich-Riem,” said Dennis Peiler, the association’s chairman. “We condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. The protection and well-being of the horses and ponies entrusted to us is our top priority. It is very important to us that the incidents are fully investigated and punished accordingly.”

The ponies that took part in the Bavarian viewing for the “Prize of the Best” were housed in a stable. The “Prize of the Best” is a Germany-wide test for the best young riders, which will be held in Warendorf from May 8th to 10th in the disciplines of dressage, jumping and vaulting.
