Iran begins military maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz one day after resuming nuclear negotiations with the US

The Iranian Navy launched a series of military maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, just one day before nuclear talks with the United States resume with a second round to take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

The maneuvers are called ‘Intelligent Control of the Strait of Hormuz’ and are intended to test the “operational” capacity of the Iranian forces in the face of “possible military threats and their security,” according to information from the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

The United States has been concentrating warships in areas of the Middle East for weeks, although the parties plan to resume their nuclear talks this Tuesday, which began indirectly on February 6.

These types of contacts had not taken place since the beginning of 2025 and were ruled out especially after the US bombings against Iranian nuclear facilities last summer.

Between April and May 2025, Washington and Tehran held five rounds of indirect consultations in Oman and Italy. The US attacks, ordered by the country’s president, Donald Trump, took place even though US intelligence had concluded that Iran was not developing nuclear weapons.
