Municipal finances: “Being mayor means seeing far but looking at things closely”

A “balancing act”. This is how Florian Bercault, young mayor (various left) of Laval, 50,000 inhabitants and capital of Mayenne, defines his function. “You are constantly on the edge, juggling constraints,” explains this 35-year-old former business manager.

“When I was elected six years ago, the municipality was in debt to the tune of 90 million euros,” he explains, a victim like many others of toxic loans based on the Swiss franc.
