“Your success is our success”: Rubio’s campaign help for Orbán

Marco Rubio made it clear early on that it was primarily a friendly visit. “President Trump is wholeheartedly committed to your success“, he said US Secretary of State immediately after becoming Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest had shaken hands. “The very, very close personal and professional relationship between you two has been beneficial to both of our countries. Your success is our success too.”

In just under two months is elected in Hungaryand at the moment it actually looks as if Orbán, who has now ruled for 16 years, might have to give up his place in the sun. Most polls see his right-wing nationalist stance Fidesz-Partei around five percentage points behind TISSA of the opposition leader Peter Hungarian.

Donald Trump wants to prevent this with all her might. In the new one national security strategy the US government will Hungary named as a central partner in order to supposedly be supported by the EU advanced “Extinction of European civilization through uncontrolled mass migrationAnd so US President Orbán even expressed his “unrestricted support for re-election” on social media last week.

That Rubio during his four-day stay in Europe as part of the Munich Security Conference made a stop in Hungary on Monday, of all places, is part of Trump’s campaign aid.

In return, Hungary agrees to purchase US nuclear technology

There was definitely something worthwhile to discuss; despite the sanctions, Hungary is still consuming on a large scale Oil and gas from Russia. This is possible because Viktor Orbán is in… EU-Rat one Special permit negotiated – otherwise he would have everything Sanctions package when coordinating with his Veto prevented. After a meeting with Trump in November, the USA also exempted Hungary from its Russia sanctions.

The talks between Rubio and Orbán are also said to have been about extending this special permit. In return, according to the US agency AP, Orbán promised to do so in the future Liquefied petroleum gas (LNG) available from the USA. Both also signed a Nuclear agreementin which Hungary commits to using US technology to operate its Nuclear power plants to buy.

In Slovakia, Rubio played the same game

This is very reminiscent of Rubio’s previous visit Bratislava on Sunday. Slovakia also continues to receive Russian gasalthough not to the same extent. The head of government there Robert Fico Just like Orbán, he also maintains good contacts with Donald Trump and the Russian President Wladimir Putin.

Nevertheless, Fico was forced to make concessions when meeting with Rubio: Slovakia would not only buy four US F-16 fighter jets, but also a new one Nuclear power plant near the Austrian border build – the US company Westinghouse is likely to receive the contract.

Following Rubio’s visit, Orbán himself spoke grandly of a “new, golden age” for relations between Hungary and the United States. If he has his way, his country should continue to be a world stage: Budapest will continue to offer itself as a venue for a meeting between Putin and the Ukrainian president Wolodimir Selenskij to; Trump is “warmly invited” to come anyway.

Ideally before the election date on April 12th.
