Chinese food delivery giant Meituan is coming to Vietnam

Meituan currently accounts for nearly 70% of the market share in China and is planning to enter the Vietnamese market.

At the end of 2025, a business named Meituan Technology Co., Ltd. was established in Ho Chi Minh City, registering the business of information technology services and computer-related services. In February, the company began recruiting business development personnel, although it has not yet announced its business plan and service launch date.

According to content posted on recruitment platforms, Meituan Vietnam is recruiting people to introduce the platform, find, sign and support partners such as restaurants, hotels and entertainment facilities in Ho Chi Minh City. Candidates are also required to assist partners with application submissions, onboarding products to the platform, and ensuring smooth order processing.

These descriptions show that Meituan Vietnam is aiming to build a partner network in the food and service sector – a familiar step for food delivery platforms when entering a new market. This is acknowledged by the business itself, when on the recruitment website, Meituan Vietnam claims to be the operating unit of Meituan (China), which is building a team in Vietnam to develop a digital service ecosystem.

Although it is not a familiar platform to Vietnamese users, Meituan is currently one of the leading businesses in the online life services segment in China. The company operates an ecosystem including food delivery, instant delivery, restaurant and hotel reservations, entertainment ticket sales and some transportation services. In particular, food delivery is considered the core business.

In Vietnam, food delivery services are often associated with technology vehicle platforms. Since 2014, when foreign companies first brought the ride-hailing model through apps to Vietnam, the market initially only had the form of booking taxis via apps, then gradually expanded to passenger motorbikes, cargo motorbikes and food delivery.

Meituan’s establishment of a legal entity in Vietnam takes place in the context of the hot development of the ride-hailing and food delivery service market. According to Mordor Intelligence, the scale of Vietnam’s ride-hailing market was estimated to reach one billion USD last year and could exceed 3 billion USD in 2031, with a compound annual growth rate of 19.5% in the period 2025-2031.

According to a survey by market research company Rakuten Insight, Vietnam has more than 10 active ride-hailing platforms, notably Grab, Xanh SM and Be. Report “Habit of using super apps in Vietnam” by Cimigo, May 2025, shows that Be is currently the leading domestic platform in the two-wheeled service segment, including ride-hailing, fast delivery and food delivery.

If officially launched, Meituan will enter a clearly established market, with a high level of competition and users familiar with the food delivery model associated with the technology vehicle ecosystem.
