Police close case during inspection of fraudulent trade in Wilrijk

The Antwerp police neighborhood team organized an action last Friday in the fight against fraudulent trading. The neighborhood team received specialized support from the TSW (Supervision of Social Laws) service and the UNO team (Exploitation and Undermining) of the city of Antwerp.

The teams checked ten locations together. “The action led, among other things, to the immediate closure of a telecom shop because there was no valid operating permit,” says Wouter Bruyns, spokesperson for the Antwerp police. “Three undeclared workers were found on a construction site. The trio had an illegal residence status and were administratively arrested. During the inspection, one person tried to flee.”

In two businesses, in addition to regular merchandise, the police also found material that encouraged drug use. For example, the police seized several grinders, cannabis pipes and lighters with cannabis leaves. “The inspectors also identified several problems in the field of food safety and hygiene. Expired products were on the shelves in various stores. Mouse droppings were also found in the storage room of one of the stores.”

In addition to promoting fair trade, the neighborhood team also wants to contribute to general safety and quality of life in the neighborhood with its presence. “Even before the action started in the morning, the inspectors also carried out school supervision. 36 reports were drawn up for not respecting the direction of travel. After the action, we also reported a drunk man who urinated on the district house,” says Bruyns.
