AxEMU development: towards the production of the first example

Parallel to the challenges of the launch vehicle, they are recorded significant progress for extravehicular activities. The new generation AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit) spacesuits, developed by Axiom Space for the Artemis III mission, have officially passed the technical review. This step paves the way for NASA’s critical review of the project to ensure it meets rigorous safety standards for the lunar surface.

The design of the AxEMU, also the result of collaborations with design excellence such as Prada, focuses on unprecedented flexibility. According to the data released, the system underwent over 850 hours of testing with human personnel, simulating the microgravity and thermal insulation conditions of the lunar south pole. “This achievement reflects our shared commitment to creating a safe, high-performance lunar spacesuit that will allow astronauts to explore the surface of the Moon“, said Lara Kearney, program manager for extravehicular activities.

Financial strategies and mission roadmaps

NASA’s approach for Artemis marks a discontinuity from the past: the agency does not own the hardware, but rents its use from private partners. This “as-a-service” model, already tested with the Crew Dragon capsules, is now being extended to spacesuits to optimize costs and times. Axiom Space recently consolidated its financial position with $350 million in new capital, ensuring the continuity of future commercial space station projects.

As for the mission history, the launch window for Artemis II remains set no earlier than March 2026subject to the completion of a second refueling simulation (wet dress rehearsal). For the human landing planned with Artemis III, the objective remains the end of 2028, a date that will depend on the definitive validation of new life support and mobility technologies.
