Iran unveils a “general” pact with the US on “guiding principles” for a possible nuclear deal

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, noted this Tuesday that the second round of indirect talks with the United States have included “quite serious discussions” and has revealed a “general agreement on a series of guiding principles” to address a possible agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

“In this round, there were quite serious discussions compared to the previous round, and there was a more constructive atmosphere,” he stated after leaving these contacts, held in the Swiss city of Geneva with the mediation of Oman, in charge of transmitting the messages between the Iranian and American delegations.

Thus, he has maintained that “various ideas were presented, which were seriously debated, and finally a general agreement was reached on a set of guiding principles on which we will base ourselves from now on and which we will include in the text of a possible agreement,” according to statements published on his social networks.

“This does not mean that we can reach an agreement quickly, but at least the path has begun. We hope to do it as soon as possible and we are willing to dedicate enough time to it, but when it comes to writing the text, the work becomes a little more difficult and detailed,” Araqchi explained.

In this sense, he highlighted that “a lot of progress has been made since the last meeting”, held at the beginning of February in Oman. “Now we have a clear path to follow, which I consider positive,” he noted, before stating that the parties “will work on texts of a possible agreement” in view of an exchange of documents, at which time they will consider whether there is a new round of talks.

“Now we have a clearer vision of what needs to be done and what needs to be done later,” he argued, while emphasizing that “both parties still have positions that would benefit from greater rapprochement.” “At least now we have a set of guiding principles and a clearer path to move in that direction,” he said, without the United States commenting on these contacts.

Araqchi, who heads the Iranian delegation in Geneva, has also described as “good” the talks held on Monday “on technical aspects” of the Iranian nuclear program with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, in a process marked by the repeated threats of the US president, Donald Trump, about a possible attack against the Asian country if there is no new agreement.

Iran and the United States restarted negotiations this Tuesday in Geneva in a meeting where the Iranian delegation declared its “good intention and total seriousness,” pointing out that Tehran is willing to negotiate for weeks in the Swiss city if necessary to close an agreement.

“We have our own technicians, we have our own experts in lifting sanctions, because the lifting of sanctions is an integral part of any agreement on the nuclear issue,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said in previous statements to the Iranian channel Press TV.

Trump, who initially threatened military intervention due to the repression of the latest protests in Iran, later shifted to framing his warnings with the Iranian nuclear program, which Tehran maintains is solely for peaceful purposes and which suffered a severe blow with the Israeli and US bombings in June 2025, which left more than 1,100 dead in the Asian country.

To date, Tehran has shown its distrust of reopening talks with Washington due to the aforementioned offensive, given that it took place in the middle of a diplomatic process between Iran and the United States to reach a new nuclear agreement, after the one signed in 2015 was emptied of content following the unilateral withdrawal of the North American country in 2018 by decision of Trump himself.
