Radio Kempenjoeng makes podcasts with young people: “First guests were Junior Rangers who work in Kalmthoutse Heide”

Erfgoed Voorkempen invited the Junior Rangers for the very first podcast in the Radio Kempenjoeng series. “In their podcast, the group of committed young people who are responsible for the management of the quiet area on the Kalmthoutse Heide explain what nature management actually means to them. Why is silence so valuable to them and how do they experience their place in the region? The result is an honest and fresh voice from the Kempen,” says Jan Pandelaers of Erfgoed Voorkempen. “We secretly want to know what young people find important. And what ties them to the village or region where they grow up. Because what young people cherish today is the heritage of tomorrow,” says Jan.

Jan receives help from his colleague Elisa Kint in setting up Radio Kempenjoeng. “But we also just want to offer young people a fun activity,” laughs Elisa. “We think this is something that is very easy for schools and youth movements to plan. With the help of professional podcast makers, young people set up a mobile recording studio in two hours and receive guidance in creating their own podcast.”

“The best thing is when a group is a little prepared,” says supervisor Ilse. “That makes the podcast stronger and gives the young people more satisfaction. This preparation does not take much time. The young people (or their leadership or teacher) are given some discussion topics in advance for inspiration. They look for a studio guest to interview and think about possible questions. It is not much more. With a minimum of preparation you have a fascinating activity or lesson that allows you to tick off a lot of learning goals in one go.”

Volunteers

Radio Kempenjoeng receives financial support from LEADER MarkAante Kempen +. “This means that this year we can offer workshops for free in the Voorkempen. We are also looking for volunteers who can eventually replace our professional radio makers Ilse and Jeroen. Making podcasts is not ‘rocket science’. The most important thing is that you like to stand in front of a group and get along well with young people. You can quickly learn the rest by shadowing the professionals,” say Jan Pandelaers and Elisa Kint of Erfgoed Voorkempen.
