Season balance: Women’s football: minus among Bundesliga clubs is growing

On the drip of the men’s professional clubs

In the previous season, clubs made an average loss of 1.9 million euros, now it is 2.2 million euros. This means that the clubs are more dependent than ever on the drip of the men’s licensed clubs, who balance the balance sheets. The DFB sees this as a “growing and increasingly intensive commitment of licensed clubs in women’s football” and the losses “as a strategic investment”. The SGS Essen is currently the only remaining all-women’s club in the upper house.

According to the DFB report, total income rose to over 43 million euros, almost 36 percent more than in 2023/24. The figures also included income from the Champions League and the DFB Cup.

On average, a Bundesliga player earns 4,500 euros

Since this season the Bundesliga has been increased to 14 clubs. The league wants to reposition itself for the future and advance development more quickly. That’s why a league association was founded in December. However, the GmbH that was originally planned jointly with the DFB did not come into being. A working group is currently discussing how to proceed.

One effort is to introduce a basic salary for the players – some of them cannot support themselves from the current income. After all, the monthly salary has increased from an average of 4,000 to around 4,500 euros.

2,692 visitors per game in the stadium

Contrary to the boom in women’s football in many areas, the number of spectators in the Bundesliga fell compared to the previous two seasons: an average of 2,692 visitors came to the stadiums.

The 32 free TV games were watched by an average of 370,000 viewers, with the top game between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern having 1.87 million viewers. The number of viewers on the paid streaming platforms MagentaSport and DAZN increased by an average of seven percent.
