Ilkka Herola uncertain about the continuation of his career – Eero Hirvosella has clearer notes

Finland combined athletes Ilkka Herola and Eero Hirvonen told the couple after their Olympic silver, what they think about the continuation of their careers.

Herola, 30, and Hirvonen, 30, are currently quite unexpectedly at the top of their careers. Both leave the Milan–Cortina Olympics with two medals.

However, both have considered whether they should hit the wall after this winter.

Can Finnish skiing fans no longer expect new fame from them?

“For me, the decision to quit is not easy. I can’t make a decision even after the last race of the season. I need more thinking time,” Herola said.

He said he still loves racing, especially when he’s in the shape he is now and can be on the podium every weekend.

“It’s the life I want to live,” Herola said.

“On the other hand, the sacrifices made for sports are big. I’ve been making sacrifices for 15 years. I have to think about that.”

Hirvonen seemed to be already further along in his deliberations. He hasn’t made a decision yet.

“At the moment, I believe that I will also compete next year,” Hirvonen said.

Neither of the athletes did not think that the decision of the International Olympic Committee next June will affect the career considerations of either of them. The IOC may even drop the combined five rings from the sports program of the Games.

“Of course, the decision may affect our team’s operations,” Herola said.

“However, we are optimistic and believe that these will not be the last Olympics for combined. We will not be participating in France 2030 as a sport.”

Hirvonen reminded that the IOC’s decision will come at the end of his career anyway.

“I won’t compete for another 10 years,” Hirvonen said.
