The White House finalizes Mr. Trump’s visit to China

US President Donald Trump’s visit to China, confirmed by White House officials on February 20, took place while both Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping described the two countries’ relationship as “good” and “good exchanges” in recent months.

The White House boss previously said that this visit “will be very exciting”. This will be Mr. Trump’s first time in Beijing since his last visit during his first term in 2017.

Mr. Xi is also expected to visit the US this year, but the specific time has not been announced.

Before Trump’s visit, the two countries may be working on the framework of a bilateral investment agreement, as well as aircraft and soybean deals, according to James Zimmerman, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Relations between the two countries had previously been tense since Mr. Trump imposed heavy tariffs on China at the beginning of his second term. Beijing also conducted a strong boycott of US agricultural products for much of last year.

Tensions eased after a meeting between the two leaders in South Korea in October 2025, when they reached an agreement to stop escalating tariffs for a year and agreed to stabilize relations. The two leaders then had phone calls in November 2025 and in February.

Mr. Trump’s visit to China took place after the US Supreme Court ruled against his reciprocal tax policy. This could give the US President less leverage in discussions with the Chinese President, as well as potentially boost bilateral trade.
