Lula once again condemns Maduro’s arrest by the US

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again classified the capture and imprisonment of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro by the United States as “unacceptable” and reaffirmed that there is no plausible justification for the operation. In an interview this Friday (20) with India Today, Lula argued that, if Maduro has to face justice, the trial should take place in his own country, and not abroad, criticizing the interference of one nation over another.

The Brazilian president’s statement comes amid his official visit to India, where he is celebrating bilateral agreements, and the continued repercussions of the American military intervention in Caracas, which resulted in the capture of Maduro in early January and opened a new chapter of tension in South America.

Despite Lula’s criticism, Maduro’s successor, Delci Rodríguez, signed agreements with United States President Donald Trump, including oil exploration by American companies and the release of political prisoners.

Lula has maintained that the episode represents disrespect for Venezuelan territorial integrity and a dangerous precedent for international law, in addition to insisting that the priority must be the consolidation of the democratic process in the neighboring country. Since the operation, the Brazilian government has adopted a critical line towards US action, in line with the traditional discourse of defending sovereignty and non-intervention in the region.

The episode also had repercussions on the Brazilian internal debate, fueling criticism from the opposition and reigniting the debate about Brazil’s position in the face of the Chavista regime and geopolitical tensions on the continent.

At the international level, the capture — carried out after a military action that took Maduro out of Venezuela on charges linked to drug trafficking — intensified the debate about the limits of extraterritorial jurisdiction and the role of great powers in Latin American politics, a theme that Lula has explored by saying that South America should remain a “zone of peace”.
