Netanyahu to an American official: “Is Trump still with us? I’m worried”

Thursday’s summit in Geneva between the United States and Iran may well be the last chance to achieve a breakthrough in nuclear deal negotiations. While Trump’s advisers, Witkoff and Kushner, are pushing to give diplomacy another chance, others close to the president are urging him to attack Iran.

Tonight (Sunday) we published that the one who is very concerned about this dynamic is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. An American official who met the Prime Minister last week said that Netanyahu told him that he left the meeting with Trump at the White House without a clear understanding of what the president wanted to do. Netanyahu even told the same American official: “Is he (Trump) still with us? I’m worried.”

In Jerusalem, they will follow very closely what will happen in the talks in Switzerland, when just two days after them, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio is expected to arrive in Israel and meet with Netanyahu.

Earlier today senior American officials told News 12 that they demand that Iran submit within 48 hours, meaning by Tuesday, a detailed proposal for a nuclear agreement. The reason: President Trump’s State of the Nation address that day. A senior American official said that he estimates that by Tuesday the Iranians will indeed forward their proposal to the US.

The transfer of the proposal was supposed to be a condition for the existence of another round of negotiations in Geneva. Shortly after the ultimatum, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi clarified in an interview with CBS that he would come to the meeting with a proposal. At the same time, a senior American confirmed that the talks with Iran would take place as stated on Thursday.

Senior American officials estimate that if the “last chance” summit fails, President Trump will order the launch of a large-scale American-Israeli military operation – which may be aimed directly at Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

However, as mentioned in Trump’s environment, there is a fierce debate about the direction in which the president should go. His emissaries, Kushner and Witkoff, believe that more time should be given to diplomacy. Trump is inclined to order an attack, but acceded to their request to exhaust the talks.

On the other hand, Trump’s associate, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, as well as other officials in the administration, urge the president not to wait – and to attack Iran. Graham himself told News 12 that some of the president’s advisers are pressuring him not to take military action – and called on the president to ignore them.
