The exhibition ‘Carlo Levi’s Lucanian people’ will be inaugurated in Rome on 27 February at the headquarters of the Carlo Levi Foundation (via Ancona 21). Memory and photography of Domenico Notarangelo’ open to the public until 17 April. The exhibition offers a visual and cultural journey that intertwines the work and thought of Carlo Levi with the photographic gaze of Domenico Notarangelo, restoring the human, social and symbolic depth of Lucania and the peasant world of the second half of the twentieth century.
The exhibition is therefore focused on the personal, cultural, political and human relationship that Domenico Notarangelo himself had with Carlo Levi in the fifteen-year period 1960-1975, culminating in the organization of the funeral which took place in Aliano, where Carlo Levi had been confined in 1935/36.
Furthermore, a significant core of the exhibition is dedicated to the images created by Notarangelo during the making of the film ‘Christ Stopped at Eboli’ by Francesco Rosi (1979), on which the photographer actively collaborated, establishing a relationship of profound artistic and human understanding with the director and the leading actor Gian Maria Volonté.
