The bodies of 7 Chinese tourists and a driver who died were found after the bus fell into a crack on the surface of Lake Baikal, causing the bus to sink to a depth of 18 m.
According to Russian officials, rescue forces and divers found and brought the bodies of 7 Chinese tourists and a driver ashore. These are the victims of the car accident on glacial Lake Baikal on February 20.
On February 21, Igor Kobzev, Governor of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia’s Serbia region, said a bus carrying 8 Chinese tourists plunged into a 3-meter-wide crack because the ice broke while passing through the lake and sank to a depth of 18 meters. One tourist was able to escape before the bus completely sank into the water. The Ministry said rescue forces inspected the scene with underwater cameras and mobilized divers to search for victims.
The regional prosecutor’s office also announced that it had initiated a criminal case for investigation after receiving a report that this tour was conducted by an unlicensed travel agency.

Baikal is known as the deepest freshwater lake in the world (more than 1,600 m) and is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Russia. The number of Chinese tourists to Russia has skyrocketed in recent years, after Moscow and Beijing introduced a bilateral visa-free regime.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov offered his condolences to his Chinese counterpart, according to an online statement posted on the ministry’s website on February 21.
