Although he Safer Internet Day was on February 10, the importance of being vigilant while browsing the web is a matter of 365 days a year. It is a major concern for Latin American Internet users and according to figures from Google “what is cyberbullying” and “what is grooming” were the most popular searches made by Peruvians on social networks in 2025.

To understand what it means to surf the web safely, The Commerce spoke with Priscila Couto, Program, Trust and Security leader for Google in Latin America who explained to us what it means to be safe during our time using the internet.
-Talking about Safer Internet Day. What does it mean to browse the Internet safely? There are people who surf without worrying about anything and others who are completely paranoid. What would be the ideal?
Browsing on a secure Internet means being certain that your personal data will be protected and will not be shared without your consent. Browsing a safe internet means accessing quality content, real and reliable information. And, in the family sphere, browsing a safe internet means that parents can accompany their children as digital mentors, with appropriate tools that respect family dynamics and the maturity of each child.
And, as you have indicated, the ideal point is in the balance where we navigate without total carelessness or paranoia, but rather understanding that it is necessary to have the education and seek the information to be able to navigate the digital environment safely and responsibly.
-When you were a child, parents taught you how to behave on the street. What skills or tips should they pass on now for safe internet use?
It is a universal experience of parents and exactly the same thing happens with respect to the Internet, where as when they accompanied us on our first excursions, parents today must be present, not necessarily by their side all the time, but accompanying and guiding them while their children browse the web. They must also have a frank and open conversation about risks and opportunities. They know best the maturity of their children and can decide when to warn of a greater risk or when to allow them to take advantage of an opportunity.
-In addition to discerning if there is danger, what other skills should children develop to be safe on the Internet?
A key skill is critical evaluation of information. Today there is a huge amount of content and it is not always easy to distinguish what is true from what is false.
At Google we promote tools such as Family Link for close parental support of minors’ activities, as well as educational programs such as Meet LEO, Meet LEA and Super Searchers, which help parents, educators and children to better use technology and contextualize the information they find online, all available in Spanish. Although it should be noted that although parental control tools help, the active support of parents is the fundamental factor.

-How does artificial intelligence change the security approach? Is it safe for children to interact with AIs?
Artificial intelligence presents many opportunities, but when we talk about children and adolescents there must always be adult supervision. Can’t imagine the use of artificial intelligence by minors without the guidance of parents or caregivers, where adults act as digital mentors, helping to distinguish risks from opportunities, because children do not yet have the maturity or life experience necessary to determine them themselves and use these tools responsibly.
-Countries like Australia have implemented bans on social media for those under 16 years of age, something that other nations are considering imitating. What is your position regarding these restrictions?
In Google We believe that prohibiting access to minors under 16 years of age is not the most appropriate way to address the problem, because this leaves young people without prior training or preparation for the digital life that they will face later, while it makes them lose the opportunities that their peers in other countries had, in which they were exposed to the digital environment.
Instead, we find it more appropriate to combine parental control tools with education and continuous support, which gives them the knowledge, progressively, to be able to navigate safely and responsibly.
-Prohibiting is easy, training and educating is more difficult.
Exactly. But training is necessary to form responsible and empathetic digital citizens. Those qualities are essential for a secure digital environment.
-To close, what would be the main advice you would give to parents?
Parents have a duty to teach not only how to use the internet safely, but also how to be good digital citizens, who are respectful, empathetic, and able to distinguish true from false information.
But they must also train themselves. It is not possible that only technology companies have responsibility. Parents must seek tools, education and information to adequately accompany their children on this digital journey.
-They have to learn to be able to teach.
Exactly. Learning is an essential part of the process and there are no shortcuts when it comes to educating in the digital environment.
