Mandelson’s lawyers denounce that he was detained under the false premise that he was planning to flee the United Kingdom

Peter Mandelson’s lawyers have denounced this Wednesday that the former Labor minister and former British ambassador to the United States, involved in the British plot of the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested this Monday under the false premise that he was going to flee the country.

“Peter Mandelson was arrested yesterday despite an agreement with the Police for him to attend an interview next month voluntarily. The arrest occurred following an unfounded suggestion that he was planning to leave the country and establish permanent residence abroad,” the lawyers said in statements to the BBC.

In this sense, his lawyers have denounced that this assumption is totally false. “There is absolutely no truth in such an insinuation,” they stressed.

Mandelson’s defense has thus announced that he has demanded from the Metropolitan Police Service “the evidence on which they relied to justify the arrest”, after emphasizing that his client’s “absolute priority” is to “cooperate with the police investigation” and in this way take advantage of the opportunity to “clear his name.”

British authorities detained the former Labor leader on Monday, when he was held for a few hours, on “suspicion of misconduct in public office” due to his links to Epstein. He is being investigated for allegedly revealing sensitive information to the American billionaire about the 500 billion euro bailout that the Eurozone was preparing to approve in 2010 when he was a minister in the government of then British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (2007-2010).

Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to Washington in December 2024 has put British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the ropes, who has had to come forward and apologize for trusting the former ambassador’s word, arguing that he was unaware of the depth, magnitude and scope of his relationship with Epstein.
