The production of lump, powdered and granulated sugar threatens to end in Finland

The plan to discontinue the products is related to Suomen Soker’s change negotiations at the Porkkala factory in Kirkkonummi.

Finland Sokeri begins change negotiations at its Porkkala factory in Kirkkonummi. The company informs about this in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the plan, the lump, powdered and granulated sugar lines of the factory would be discontinued and the production of the products in question would end in Finland. The company plans to replace the products in the future with similar options from its German parent company, Nordzucker, if possible.

About 112 people are involved in the change negotiations. According to a preliminary estimate, a maximum of 40 jobs are threatened in the negotiations.

The proposed changes would not affect other products, such as the production of Finnish Dansukker Suomalainen Taloussoker made from domestic sugar beet, the company says.

In the negotiation proposal, it is also proposed to end the purification of raw sugar at the Porkkala factory. At the same time, a cleaning option is being planned for the parent company Sucros Oy’s sugar factory in Säkylä, Satakunta.

Change negotiations the purpose is to respond to the challenging global market situation, the company says in the press release. Suomen Sokeri’s operations have been affected by the market changes caused by the corona pandemic, the war in Ukraine and an unpredictable and unstable operating environment. At the same time, clear changes have been observed in consumers’ spending habits over the past few years.
