Vance sees progress with Moscow and kyiv and hopes they feel “they achieved enough to end the carnage”

US Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that he sees progress in talks with Russia and Ukraine to end the war, which is entering its fifth year, insisting that he hopes they feel “that they accomplished enough to end the carnage.”

“We are optimistic and believe that we can reach a point where both the Russians and the Ukrainians feel that they have achieved enough to end the slaughter. That is what the president has tasked us with doing,” he said in statements to Fox News.

Vance explained that both the Russians and the Ukrainians “have some red lines” and although he acknowledged that the talks to end the conflict are being more difficult than expected, he reiterated that progress is being made. “I think we are making progress with both the Russians and the Ukrainians,” he reasoned.

The American vice president has insisted that diplomacy is the way forward, despite the difficulties of trilateral contacts, which have had different rounds in the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, with little progress on the political level to agree on the end of the invasion launched by Russia in February 2022.

“The way to solve this is to continue participating in diplomacy. And that is what the president has asked us to do. We have no illusions that these guys are going to meet in the middle of a field, give each other a hug and sing ‘kumbaya,'” he stressed.

Vance has thus defended continuing to work along these lines. “Over time, we will either succeed or we will not. Right now, the president maintains some optimism that we can achieve a successful closure,” he said.
