Google again bought land in Finland for a data center

Google has again bought land in Finland for a possible data center.

Now the company bought the land from the municipality of Vaala in North Ostrobothnia, the municipality says in its press release on Thursday. The company can build a data center in the area if business needs require it.

According to the municipality, the area is almost 900 hectares in size, of which the area to be zoned is about 380 hectares. The municipality of Vaala has decided to start partial general and station zoning in the area.

The area is located about six kilometers from the center of Vaala, on both sides of highway 22.

According to the municipality, before acquiring the land and starting the zoning, Google conducted extensive nature, environmental and terrain studies in the area to ensure its suitability for the planned use.

The studies included, among other things, a review of the 25 percent nature reserve reservation and the possibilities for utilizing waste heat.

Google has had data center operations in Hamina for more than ten years. The company is currently building the seventh expansion in Hamina, which is scheduled to be completed this year.

In addition Google has bought from Kajaanis and Muhos a total of approximately 2,100 hectares of land for data centers. Investment decisions on new data centers have not yet been made.
