A jackal infected with rabies has been identified in northeastern Israel.

Israel’s Ministry of Health said a jackal infected with rabies was found outside a fence on the western side of Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu in the Emek HaMa’ayanot regional council.

At the moment, there are no known people who may have had contact with the jackal. At the same time, the department asks everyone who was in contact or whose pets may have been in contact in the area of ​​the incident with an infected animal or with any stray animal during the period from February 10 to February 24, 2026 (inclusive), to urgently contact the health bureau in Afula by calling 04-6099000 or the nearest bureau at their place of residence to resolve the issue of preventive treatment.

The Ministry of Health also asks parents to find out from their children whether they have had contact with suspicious animals, and if necessary, immediately contact the health bureau. Pet owners are advised to contact their local veterinarian to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.

The Ministry of Health reminds that if you are bitten or scratched by contact with an animal, you should immediately wash the wound site with soap and water, treat it with a disinfectant and contact the health bureau to check the need for rabies prevention.
