Football: Ex-NFL player wants to go to the Olympics with Austria

It is therefore clear: the European Championship final against Finland on October 28, 2025 was Platzgummer’s last football game – crowned with the European Championship title and the previous victory in the prestigious duel against Germany. “It was not an easy decision to leave such a large part of my life behind me. But I am convinced that it will open up many opportunities for me to concentrate more on my future, both privately, professionally and health-wise.”

Platzgummer made it from the Raiders’ youth ranks to the NFL. In 2020 he moved to the New York Giants as an IPPP export, where the running back was supposed to stay for three years. It was just not enough to play in the regular season. After his return to Europe, he played again for the Raiders and most recently for Frankfurt.

Now the qualified doctor wants to get started in flag football and go to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles with Austria. The first foray into the Olympic version of flag football will take place on March 22nd in Vienna at a meeting of the AFBÖ national flag team. AFBÖ President Michael Eschlböck is enthusiastic: “For 21 years, I have seen Sandro run around the horns of his opponents. In Austria, in Europe, in the USA (NFL). I am very pleased that he, as an exceptional athlete, now wants to do everything he can to be part of LA28 with the men’s national team.”
