Trump appoints Moraes critic to dialogue with Brazil

Donald Trump’s administration chose Darren Beattie, a critic of the Brazilian government and Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes, as the main advisor in charge of articulating policies for Brazil. The information was confirmed by sources with knowledge of the matter to the Reuters news agency this Friday (27).

The conservative already served in the Republican government as US Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs and was recently chosen to preside over the Donald J. Trump Institute for Peace. Now, he will have a role more directly linked to Brazil, which could indicate a new period of friction between the two countries.

Last year, Beattie made comments on his profile on X about the economic sanctions that the Treasury Department had imposed on the Lex Institute of Legal Studies, linked to minister Alexandre de Moraes, and his wife Viviane Barci de Moraes, director of the institute.

At the time, he stated that Moraes is the “beating heart” of a persecution and censorship complex in Brazil in which one of the victims would be former president Jair Bolsonaro. In the same publication, he referred to the magistrate as a “human rights violator”.

Last year, Trump’s advisor met with figures from the Brazilian right in the USA, such as former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and journalist Paulo Figueiredo.
