BMW is recalling thousands more cars due to fire hazard

The fire risk arises from poor routing of a wiring harness on the inside of the car. When replacing a cabin filter, damage to cables can occur, which can lead to a short circuit with smoke and subsequently a fire. The routing of the cable must therefore be checked and adjusted if necessary.

BMW has announced that no accidents have yet occurred due to this problem, according to a spokesperson. An immediate inspection is necessary for vehicles that have already had an oil change and filter change. If necessary, the cabling is then redone. If the oil and filter change has not yet taken place, action should not be taken immediately and can wait until the first oil change.

Earlier this month, BMW recalled hundreds of thousands of cars after product checks found that increased wear in the contactor could occur after a large number of starts. This can make it harder for the car to start and in some cases not even start at all. In addition, a short circuit cannot be ruled out, which can lead to local overheating of the starter and, in the worst case, a fire while driving.

BMW also recalled hundreds of thousands of cars last fall because a starting problem could lead to a fire in the worst case. At that time it was not about wear, but about water that could enter the starter motor and cause corrosion.
