147 vehicles were stolen a day last year, insurers reveal

In the past 12 months, 147 insured vehicles were stolen daily in Mexico, revealed the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS). The theft of covered vehicles fell 15 percent in the period from February 2025 to January 2026 compared to the previous year, which “without a doubt consolidates the downward trend that has been seen in the last months of last year,” said Norma Alicia Rosas, general director of AMIS.

He explained that in the aforementioned period, the theft of 53,700 insured vehicles was reported, 15 percent less than the previous year. “The value of cars stolen annually can represent close to 17 billion pesos,” he added.

Sinaloa was the only entity in the country with an upward trend of 63.9 percent in the theft of insured vehicles. Unlike the temporary rebound observed in the west of the country, the insurance sector warned that that state faces a sustained increase in vehicle theft, associated with the context of violence.

He added that in Sinaloa “we are reporting a significant increase, of 1,923 stolen vehicles in 2021, and in 2025-2026, incorporating from February to January, 4,090 units were stolen.”

The sector stressed that crime behavior can vary by entity and does not necessarily respond to a uniform national trend.

During 2024, 58 percent of vehicles were stolen with violence – which implies that the person is present, often driving, inside the vehicle, but not necessarily that it is damaged – which decreased slightly to 55 percent last year.

Theft with violence is concentrated in heavy vehicles in a very important way. The most stolen subbrands in the past 12 months were Nissan’s Versa, with 2,163 violent robberies; Kenworth, with 1,946; Nissan NP300, with 1,470; 1,411 Bajaj and Nissan March motorcycles, with 1,163.
