Alpine skiing – Vogt is injured in Garmisch

Ski racer Luis Vogt has to end his season due to injury before the World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 24-year-old suffered a severe overstretching of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the final training for the descent on the Kandahar on Friday. Although surgery is not necessary, the knee must be immobilized.

He “lost his position at the gate at the entrance to the ice slope,” said Vogt after the incident in training. He called the fact that the injury was depriving him of home races “extremely bitter and annoying.” On the other hand, he added, “it could have been worse.” He will now concentrate on rehabilitation.

The speed specialist had already missed the Olympics, although he had met the national standard by finishing eighth in the downhill classic in Kitzbühel shortly before the Winter Games. But the result came too late and an exemption was refused by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Frenchman Nils Alphand also fell during training on Friday. As his association announced, he suffered a sprained acromioclavicular joint and a rib injury.

In Garmisch there will be a downhill run on Saturday, followed by a Super-G on Sunday (both 11.15 a.m./ARD and Eurosport). Both races were postponed by half an hour due to the warm temperatures.
