Perfume Pagoda through the lens of international visitors 35 years ago

In 1991, German teacher Hans-Peter Grumpe first came to Vietnam and made a trip of discovery from South to North. He shared that Vietnamese tourism 35 years ago was still in its infancy, and moving between locations still had many obstacles. International visitors are required to have special permits for all destinations outside the normal itinerary, and some permits can only be obtained in Hanoi.

Hans came to Perfume Pagoda after visiting Hanoi. The pagoda was then located in Ha Tay province, 60 km from the capital, now in My Duc commune, Hanoi. The journey to visit the pagoda starts from Duc wharf (photo), with houses and landscapes on both banks still simple, with almost no developed services.
